Casual News – A Gaming Drought is Coming

IMG_1031

Guys and gals, I’d like to announce the newest addition to our gaming family!

It’s gonna be awhile before I can game on my PS4 again. I know, I know what you’re thinking…how will you ever decide if you want a game that’s already been out for a year or two without my input? I am deeply sorry for this, but my wife and I are moving across the country. Believe in your gamer’s intuition for the coming months!

To cope with this drought, my wife is finally getting a new Nintendo system. I acquired one of the Fire Emblem Fates to play along the road trip as well. Why did I chose Conquest, you ask? Let me answer that by asking you this…would you rather be a Lannister or a Stark?

We would have gotten Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, however, they were sold out in this remote section of Alaska. We will most likely pick it up on a stop along the way.

Everyone, my PS4 is packed. Our honeymoon stage is over. We have to get through some dark times now. I ask you to be patient with me. We can face this obstacle as a unit, and I believe we will be stronger for it.

In the meantime, I have a favor to ask. If any of you stream on Twitch, share your accounts with me in the comments so I can live vicariously through you! Also, if anyone has any good 3DS recommendations, that would be appreciated.

  1. You’re traveling across Alaska?
Didn’t you like how winter is leaving? What game are you playing here? 😉
I have a Twitch channel https://www.twitch.tv/dowlphin and if I do stream some day, it will have to be limited to 2D stuff or such, since I don’t have good upload bandwidth. But knowing that if I do, someone might actually be notified and watch, that just might make a crucial difference.

P.S.: BTW forget my Star Citizen referral code. I don’t want people to use it anymore, since it would give me stuff I actually don’t want to see in my hangar. … Yeah, that’s how I am. Not just about accumulation. 🙂

  2. Hey man! Safe travels and enjoy the ROAD TRIP!!

Final Fantasy Explorers is wonderful for 3DS if you enjoy the Final Fantasy universe.

I stream on Twitch and YouTube as well from time to time! Feel free to stop in anytime! Twitch.tv/derekpadakowski or YouTube if you search Derekpadakowski.

I hope you enjoy your time road tripping and Fire Embleming! Can’t wait to see future posts. 🙂

      • Yeah. I mean Final Fantasy Explorers is definitely a fan service game to long time fans while kind of using monster hunter like controls to create a one of a kind new experience for the series. However, it has enough general knowledge to get you kind of caught up in some of the lore from the previous games universes. It might be a little rough at first, for the first 5-10 hours, just for fair warning though.

      • Are there any final Fantasy 3DS games that would be better as an introduction? Also, I’m curious how you set up streaming for a charity? That’s pretty cool. Represent for gamers!

      • Unfortunately on the 3DS there aren’t really any other Final Fantasy games except for the Theatrythmn, but those are music rythmn games using the music to go on quests and level characters. Wonderful game, but idk how they would be for newer players of the series. I know you can get the older games on apple and Android devices though. Final Fantasy IV would be perfect for either of those devices. Lol.

      • As far as the streaming for charity you can sign up during St. Jude’s annual Play Live event. Which you can sign up for now, but I think the actual contest/event is in October this year. Extra Life is another wonderful site where you actually pick local hospitals to do gaming fundraisers for.

      • Haha. I can understand that, I’m still relatively new to all this streaming business myself.

If all else fails and you decide against explorers Kirby Triple Deluxe is always a wonderful choice for a newer 3DS owner. 🙂

      • I mean VII is a classic, but it missed me by a couple of years. So I grew up with X and enjoyed it way more. Fire Emblem Fates won’t let you down though. Both versions of that game are awesome, well what I’ve played of them was anyway. Lol.

  3. Hey, congratulations, bro! So lucky…

Been wanting a New 3DS and Wii U for a while now. 😦

    As for recommendations:

    *Hyrule Warriors Legends

*Super Smash Bros. For Nintendo 3DS

    *Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition

    *Ocarina Of Time 3D

    *Majora’s Mask 3D

Also, because you have a New 3DS, you have access to loads of SNES games. Have fun!

  4. Since you’ve gotten a New 3DS, I can pretty much recommend, if you like the game style, Hyrule Warriors Legends, ONLY if you haven’t already gotten the Wii U version though. For $40, it has an insane amount of content, and (if you enjoy it) you’ll most likely be hooked.

If that game doesn’t suit your fancy, I can easily suggest Kid Icarus Uprising (if the controls don’t steer you away) and also Kirby Triple Deluxe.

  5. I feel obliged to recommend Smash Bro’s! Good luck on your travels and see you on the other side.

I’m currently awaiting the arrival of an Elgato HD60 Pro so streaming may just be on the horizon for me. Stay tuned…

  6. Safe travels! I hope you and your wife have a good time. If you haven’t played Persona 4 Golden yet I highly recommend that for the Vita. Even if you played the original on PS2. Or Hohokum for the Vita. I dunno if it’s the music but whenever I play that while I’m traveling (I often have to go to overseas to Japan) I get super amped. I apologize if you’ve already reviewed these titles. I’m new. 😉

PS Final Fantasy X/X-2 Remaster is my vote for the Final Fantasies.

  7. Good luck and Happy Trails for the trip (And wherever your new port of gamerdom brings you, of course)!

Alas – you got New Leaf! I spent a period of time so lengthy and immobile playing that game that I’m almost apologetic. Almost. Definitely recommend Link Between Worlds – it was one of my least expected titles to get me hooked. I’d also recommend sifting through the eShop , as Nintendo have recently added a load of SNES games for your New 3DS pleasure. Earthbound and Super Metroid are two of my favourites.

    • I didn’t even know about the SNES ability before I got it, so I can’t wait. A link between worlds will be the first Zelda game we get when we find it in stock somewhere. Alaska has pretty crappy supplies.

  8. I hate the summer months because they’re so dry and it’s basically a badlands, a wasteland but now I feel like that’s opening up because I feel like more games are coming out in the summer, like Mirror’s Edge, DOOM, etc. But I always look at the drought like this: Going through my backlog and beating games that I never really played or started and never finished.

  9. Have fun with the traveling 🙂

For good 3ds games i would suggest the following :
    Pokemon X/Y (Not ORAS)
Legend of Zelda: link between worlds
    Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon
    Bravely Default
    Fire Emblem Awakening
    Fantasy Life
    SHOVEL KNIGHT

    hope it helps 🙂

  10. Best of luck with the move! If you’re into puzzles at all, I highly recommend the Professor Layton series. They’re pretty plot heavy too, which help keep the games moving forward. Also, Rhythm Heaven is an awesomely addictive and quirky game. I can’t even begin to describe it in words, so a YouTube search might be necessary before purchasing. It may prevent you from doing anything productive for a while, though lol

  11. I’m not exactly sure what your tastes are since I only recently started following, but I’d say… Get Fire Emblem Awakening as well (but maybe after you finish all 3 parts of Fates. They’re rather consuming games.)
I really liked the 3ds port of Devil Survivor 2. Since you got a new 3ds, you can also get Xenoblade Chronicles. I don’t know what the 3ds port is like, but the original Wii game was fantastic.
Other suggestions: Bravely Default, Rune Factory 4, the Phoenix Wright Trilogy (i’d skip Dual Destinies), Etrian Odyssey IV.

  12. I’ve never played Animal Crossing, but the soundtrack is fantastic background music for my toddler during the day. It seems so happy. That had nothing to do with your post but I had to throw that out there. Safe travels!

  13. This might end up eating up time that could be going into playing games for review, but Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is one of my favourite games for the 3DS. A new entry to the series is coming soon, but 4 is just so fun if you can get into it.

Also definitely check out Ace Attorney Trilogy on the eShop I you haven’t played the series before, really fun stories and something a little different from regular handheld fare.

Also get on the SNES game section of the store and get Donkey Kong Country. That series is still fantastic year’s after release.

Safe journey and happy portable gaming!

  14. Depending on your tastes I would recommend either Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon for the silliness, or Xenoblade Chronicles 3D if you’re in the mood for a really awesome JRPG.

  15. Hope you have a great trip SF! I definitely need to get myself a 3DS at some point, starting to get into Pokémon again after how awesome Pokémon Go turned out to be 😀 I’m not a streamer unfortunately, but I am a fellow blogger, maybe check out my page if you get a chance 🙂 Anyway, have a great trip, I’m definitely following this blog 😀

  16. Hopefully Pokemon Sun and Moon will be better than Pokemon X or Y. X in particular was too easy, and the mega-evolutions tended to hint that they were running out of creative ideas.

  17. I thought Bravely Default sounded interesting. The new fire emblems though were seriously gutted I hear. Nintendo America had a problem with a little PC polly who cared more about social politcs than staying true to the art of the game when localizing. The funny thing is they didn’t fire her for ridiculing their customers on twitter by calling them big man-children, they fired her for stripping as a side job. Kinda a odd priority there, abusing Nintendo’s customers is fine and tampering with a game cause it offends your social belifes is fine but stripping is out. I blame it on the management of the US branch, the home office in Japan needs to jump on their asses.

  18. Hey, goodluck and safe travels. I’m new to this whole blogging thing, but I’ve read a your posts, and they’re really good. Sorry you won’t be on the PS4 for a while, but Fire Emblem Fates is a great game. I’m actually starting a gaming blog of my own, talking about upcoming gaming conventions, and conventions that just passed. It would be great if maybe you could give me a tip on blogging.
PS: I live on the east coast!
